The focus of my research is the challenge of managing diverse human activities in large regions while maintaining environmental integrity and sustainability. Although I started my university education at the University of Victoria in Zoology, I finished my undergrad at the University of Waterloo, studying ecology and environmental studies in its unique Integrated Studies programme. My MSc and PhD are both in planning, from the Universities of B.C. and Waterloo, respectively. I have been actively involved in consulting on protected areas, sustainability, state of the environment reporting, and ecological assessment, among others.
In studying how to manage large complex regions over the last 30 years recurring themes have been systems approaches and complexity, protected areas, sustainability, ecosystem health and integrity, ecosystem-based and integrated resource and environmental management, and environmental planning and policy. Other areas of long-standing interest include environmental education, environmental thought, and the application of information technology in REM. My main field sites include the St. Elias region of Yukon, Alaska, and BC; the Canadian Rockies; the BC central coast; Australia; Italy; and the Grand River Basin, Ontario.
