Computer Science and Physics (BSc)

Acquire hands-on computer programming skills while gaining in-depth knowledge of modern physics. Apply your learning by engaging in faculty research projects, where you could build fiber lasers, explore quantum computers, design ultra-sensitive biosensors, and more. These experiences not only enhance your academic understanding but also prepare you for diverse career opportunities in tech and scientific research. Computer Science is also offered as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree.

Degree Highlights

Your future professors work hard to make sure your academic experience is current, complete and designed to open doors in your career. Here are a few things you can count on:

  • Career-Ready Curriculum: Develop strong algorithm analysis and design skills, alongside a deep understanding of physical principles such as quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and optics. Equip yourself with the skills needed to fill the demands of a developing technology sector in careers such as a computer analyst, an optical engineer, or a business intelligence consultant.
  • Extensive Lab Time: There’s nothing like hands-on experience to solidify your learning and round out your resume, so you’ll spend lots of time in the lab and supporting faculty-led research projects.

Top Experiences

Here are just a few of our students’ favourite ways to apply their learning in the real world throughout their degree (check out the Experience Guide for even more!):

  • Co-op: You can apply to co-op at the end of first year, and complete three four-month work terms over the course of your four-year degree.
  • Professional Experience Program: Participate in a 12- or 16-month work term to gain real-world experience in programming, networking technology, quality assurance, technical support or information technology consulting.
  • Research Opportunities: Look for summer research opportunities in a faculty member’s lab or the Centre for Women in Science and apply for a FOSSA Research Scholarship and/or the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) to get funding.
